James Street House | Bondi Junction
The Sydney home of Director and Designer Melanie Tomlinson was completed in 2015, a semi-detached home that was almost entirely rebuilt from the ground up with exception of the front room and a few side walls. Melanie's family are true Sydney-siders who love the buzz of the nearby city to the West, and the relaxed nature of the parks & beaches to the East. Their growing young family needed a hub where they could thrive, be near to everything they loved and maintain a short commute to their workplace.
Inspiration was drawn from the terrace style homes in the nearby neighbourhoods of Paddington and the beach side pads of Bronte and Bondi, resulting in a crisp black and white base to the exterior with soft white, grey and blue tones to the interior. It was important that given the size of the courtyard was small, you still felt the connection with the outdoors, the landscaping was strategic and offered further colour to be drawn into the living space of the home.
The style is an understated mix of beachside tones and finishes that contrast against the traditional elements of the period of the Victorian home originally built in 1914. There was heavy focus on making the most of every inch in terms of storage and functional areas, the result; a contemporary home that was easy to live in and balanced.
